MANILA – The chief of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said on Tuesday that the government is considering limiting the number of SIM cards an individual can own in a bid to further deter scammers.

The proposal was made as text scams continue to proliferate in the Philippines despite the implementation of the SIM Card Registration law.

Undersecretary Alexander Ramos said he is looking at a maximum of four to five SIMs per person as he believes having too many is “abnormal.”

But he said telco players are proposing a maximum of 10 sim cards per person as the “reasonable” option.

This was happening before SIM card registration even began! Dami nila nadidiscover every week na mga resellers ng cards with fake credentials. Tinuloy pa rin nila. Now they’re starting to think of solutions when registration has completed. And despite knowing that syndicates exist, their idea is to limit ownership? Lmao.

Here we go again, this restrictions will just keep on creeping to the point it becomes unwieldy. What’s next social media registration to the government? For sure this proposal will not stop scam and will not decrease it.

When the Chief of the CICC is assuming that the text scams are operated by individuals alone, not by corporate or business entities with ghost employees and all, it feels like escape-goating.
