    Sayo’s journey is so different these days now that she’s traveling with others. She would have been unlikely to stick around in this area previously due to the lack of crystal reactions. I am curious what led Isami to want to stay and watch Hans work.

      I think it has to do with Sayo - early in the chapter he thinks about how she’s pretty much immortal and will live much longer than either of the siblings. He wasn’t particularly interested in the watch initially but changed his mind the moment the watchmaker talks about mechanical watches working indefinitely under the right circumstances.
      He probably thinks it would be a nice gift for whenever they part ways, whether it’s due to time or them finding (and possibly staying with) their objective.

        Yeah, I think the gift idea is spot on. I ended up reading the first half of this chapter before being interrupted and then finished the second half a while later, so I had forgotten his bit in the beginning. He even mentions time specifically.
