It’s 2.48GHz. If that’s slow depends on how much work is done per update. In absolute terms, giga means milliard. 10⁹. It’s a very high number. For context, ARM Cortex A520 updates at 2Ghz (Though it’s designed to be paired with a Cortex X4 which can update at 3GHz). A520 is brand new and used in Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm’s top product.

The clock rate isn’t a wholistic performance indicator. It describes how often the CPU core can perform an action. But imagine a scenario where one CPU can do something that another CPU needs to do in steps. Then the more basic CPU needs to run faster by a factor corresponding to the number of extra steps. That very quickly becomes infeasible as electricity (and heat) will also scale by the same factor.

Why do you say it’s slow? Are there benchmarks?

How do you mean? In the article it says “The Kirin 9000C is an octa-core CPU with 12 threads and a 2.48 GHz frequency”
If they had a single thread CPU that could compete with Alder Lake that would be fantastic, I could finally live out my dream of dolphin-emu running perfectly.

Not what this article is about but I can’t wait for China to surpass the west at high end chips and watch them cry over the natural consequences of banning export to China when they desperately need to import to be competitive.

This seems like a completely legitimate business.

I enjoyed the VR version of this a lot more and for longer than the flat version. Unlikely but it would be cool if when they updated the game they’d update the VR version too.
