  • We don’t know why someone hit Metcalf and that was over a decade ago.

Reposting a comment from a few months ago:

Was just worrying if we were due for one of these:

Over the course of 19 minutes, about one hundred bullets caused $15 million dollars in damage to our power grid, damaging components that take months to manufacture: 2013’s Metcalf sniper attack near San Jose, California

    A second incident, 2022

Moore County, NC: Gunmen shot up two power substations. 40K customers lost power. Took days to fix. FBI had warned about extremist threats to grid. Investigators found shell casings, offered $75K reward. Theories: anti-drag show motive or generic extremism. One lady died when her oxygen machine stopped (homicide). Schools closed, curfew imposed. NC governor pissed. White House “monitoring.”

If terrorists were testing our response time or something, they would’ve acted on a large scale by now right? I kinda need to always be able to charge my PC/phone soooo

  • Illiteracy is far more common in the US than it should be, and the system sidesteps that issue, which I do commend them for. It’s amazing though because, for whatever reason, I feel like they’d fire me when I couldn’t hang.

Any reason to lump socially toxic in there with other descriptors? 🙂 Also I sure hope that convicts return/go to work instead of returning to the taxpayer-funded three hots and a cot!

Shoutout to the incredible Homebody Industries on the last point!

  • It’s bothered me but I’m glad you asked.

Shining the best light I can:

Every Lemmy comment as a bad take / disagree button, and it’s the reply to box. You can express whatever opinion you want and anyone who has a problem with it will have to use at least 3 or so taps or clicks to express their disapproval. So no drive by downvoting from people who don’t actually care that much about your comment but saw other people downvoted it and succumb to the herd mentality.

When you use an instance which doesn’t support downvotes, you’ll never visit your profile and see that a bunch of strangers didn’t like something you freely put out into the world unless they offered some feedback beyond a singular thumbs down - unless they reply with a thumbs down emoji, of course.

I would hope that on a platform where downvotes are disabled, when you go into a spicy thread, if 3 idiots posted comments sympathizing with Nazis or something, they would all be at the bottom regardless with 1 upvote each and lots of sarcastic and angry replies.

I still am not sold. But it’s making more sense than before you asked the question.

  • I imagine something like “I do not consent to a search nor seizure of any of my property. May I reach into my pocket so I may place my phone in plain view? If my property is going to be seized even against my will, I still want to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Then repeat the no consent line as you place your phone on your dashboard or whatever.

I imagine this means your lawyer will have body cam footage of the double nonconsent and the judge will see you were willing to comply even with potentially unlawful orders so the justice system could sort it out in court instead of someone trying to fight it out on the street.
