  • I would be torn between Python and Rust.

The case for Python is that I’m already very experienced in it (nearly 20 years), there’s a good job market out there for it, and the ecosystem is one of the best in existence. It’s like a comfortable well made jacket, maybe a tad worn in some areas but very functional. And it’s not standing still, with a community that’s committed to constant improvement.

Rust is more fun. I like the way it’s been put together. It can also be used in more areas. There are some niches (wasm, low level, kernel) where Python just doesn’t work. It has been able to benefit from the years of mistakes from Python and other languages on things like how it handles Unicode strings. I don’t know it as well as Python, but I barely get a chance to work with it so that could change quickly in time.

The mods on /c/worldnews actively put a thumb on the scale when it comes to subjects like the Israeli-Palstinian conflict. If you don’t follow the party line, your comment is subject to removal. That “No hate speech, bigotry, propaganda, etc” rule does a lot of work. It’s not worth getting in a fight over, but I was a little sore that my comment about taking Hamas’ casualty statistics with a grain of salt would be prudent was deleted, while downright hateful comments towards Israel were left standing.

  • I hear this all the time, that pets can sense anguish and try to comfort you. It makes me miss having the opportunity to have had a pet, despite the care needed.

On the flip side, even standoffish pets can have a change of demeanor under poor circumstances. One person was talking about when her cat who had never even been friendly towards her was dying, it sought her out. The cat was terrified, so they went to the one place where they felt safe. The person telling the story felt oddly comforted that the cat ultimately did have some feelings for her.

It would be awesome to have a base-12 number system paired with a base-12 measurement system. It’s just so much nicer to deal with than metric or imperial. So many measurements would become much easier. Take length. You could have the base measurement be equal to a meter, then use 1/3 meter sticks as roughly equivalent to a 1 foot ruler.

It’s not even that. At the time they split, English wasn’t as standardized. You can see it looking back in the Lewis and Clark expedition journals written by Meriwether Lewis. He doesn’t even have consistency in his own writing, and he was no country bumpkin.
