So there’s a possibility the instance I use will go offline. I’ve never had to think about this until now, but I want to choose a new instance and I’m wondering how this will affect things.
Certain instances have defederated from furry instances right? If I create an account on pawb.social for example, will I lose access to any particular communities? Is that a stable server running the latest version of Lemmy?
The latest version of Lemmy is not stable. I don’t know what the issues are, but I keep hearing about federation issues in version 19 + . I know lemmy.ml had defederated from nsfw instances, including yiffit, but not pawb. Pawb is much more proactive in defederating compared to yiffit. I can’t find it, so from memory, but because federation (including “all”) is an active process and doesn’t happen automatically, yiffit is much more, “if there is no interaction, there is no need to defederate”. You can see who a parcular instace has defederated from by going to /instances on that instance.
As far as stability, although not constant posters, the admin here, and those at pawb usually respond to pings and are active on mastodon as well. So long as the server itself is running, you can check https://status.yiffit.net/. The only downtime I can remember here was a few hours one day. Ironically the day somebody posted congrats on the uptime.
I think there are some tools to help move an account across instances. The upload issue is not only on feddit.uk
Just remind me on this - if an instance like lemmy.ml has defederated yiffit, and I create an account on yiffit, would I still be able to see/interact with posts from on lemmy.ml communities? Or does it affect communication both ways?
Ah thanks for confirming that the upload issue is more widespread. I still may consider migrating anyway, as the owner of my current instance has gone awol, which doesn’t bode well…
No, you will not be able to interact with communities on lemmy.ml. You will only see communities and posts from before the defederation. I think you will still be able to interact with users on lemmy.ml on other instances though.
Ahh thanks. I think Pawb would be a good alternative then. I might set up an account as a backup option, just in case my instance does suddenly go offline.
