    It was strange. The smell of freedom lurking just around the corner mixed up with fear of repercussions.

    I think a lot of it was fueled by the incompetence of the soviets. They hadn’t left much for the people to lose - it would work the same in any country, I imagine.

        You’re thinking of Russia, they didn’t do well from the break up of the USSR because they were always an extractive empire. The Baltic states gained their independance and I don’t think anyone can seriously claim they’re worse off
