I’m in the minority (no politics intended) that enjoys the reboot/5. It’s a lot like SR2 under the surface and has some really great gameplay moments. Are there warts, yeah. Are there some bad design decisions? Oh for sure. But, it’s an enjoyable podcast game and sometimes that’s enough!

Even IdolNinja was saying it was pretty good.

It wasnt terrible, but it was a decent return to form considering the last two games before it went all in on the super powers and over the top cartoonyness. Definitely not something with staying power like the previous games, though.

I dug the return to silly side missions and down to earth gangster-dom.

RIP to a legend as well. The times I interacted with him on Steam and Reddit, he was a great guy. Gentlemen is a constant on every fresh OS install.

Yeah, thats what I loved about SR2 the most that was lost in the other games. The story was still serious, about the gang and fighting for territory from rival gangs, while the gameplay had those silly side missions that “cut the tension” in the main story. They didnt do that for SR3. They got rid of the main missions and basically took the sides from SR2 and made those into the main missions. Like they misunderstood what people loved about SR2 and doubled down on silly missions. But it was the balance that made it so good!

Still sucks to see Volition gone. They made some great stuff.

Could not agree more about Volition. During that early/mid 00-10’s era they were an immediate buy as a studio. From RF1 all the way to SR4. They completely embodied the AA tier of games.

Great gameplay, fun story and characters and, in just about every game one or two unique ideas that set them apart from their peers.

Also Red Faction. My friend and I had a blast on PS2 with it. Even more so when it came to PC where they had mods.

I really wanted 5 to be as good as 3 or at least not a buggy mess. It was clear that the game was released years early.

I didn’t pick it up until launch day on Steam and had a pretty bug free experience (even on Deck). That’s a bummer that it dropped with issues.

I would of loved to seen a 2nd entry in this timeline.

Yeah I got it at launch like a dummy. Every loading screen my outfit would randomize, my controller layout would randomize and some missions were nearly impossible because you couldn’t leave the mission area to kill the dudes that spawned in the wrong place.

That sounds frustrating. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to get games at this scale with clean launches.

I had a terrible experience with Baldurs Gate 3 at launch and felt like I was in an alternate world as I watched it get mass acclaim.

I love this guy, he’s a joy to listen to. Delves in to such detail and makes it interesting.
