And have you thought about what happens the next day? Orban applies to join the Russian Federation. As if Kaliningrad isn’t enough of a problem for the EU now we’ve got a Russian forward base west of Vienna.

We have no choice but to keep Hungary IN the EU. Unless of course they want to leave. It’s not like we forced them to join or stay.

What you wrote is so dumb. Why and how would Hungary join Russia? You can’t just apply to join another country. And what Hungary stands to win from leaving EU and joining Russia? Hungary is literally surrounded by EU countries or country that want to get into EU. There is no treaty that would allow any Russian forces or literally anything from Russia to get to Hungary, so you can’t compare it with Kaliningrad. Hungary has literally nothing to gain from leaving EU, a lot to lose and no way to threaten the EU if it leaves EU. The only “power” Hungary has is voting in ways that create problems for other EU members.

I’m sure that Orban has no intention of doing so, but sure you can.

I meant that you need to take care of a lot of diplomacy related stuff before doing so. Even Kaliningrad has agreements to allow consumer goods to get in from Russia.

You can’t apply, but you can de-facto fall under the control of a foreign force. Look at Belarus for how this would work. Hungary could easily be hosting Russian troops and nukes in the same way.

One big difference, Belarus isn’t surrounded almost completely by NATO countries. And Hungary has not any direct border with Russia. To get nukes to Hungary, Russia should go through Ukraine or through NATO territory.

Well that’s kind of the whole point of the war in Ukraine. Land bridge to Transnistria. Next step will be a land bridge to Hungary and Slovakia.
