Is webp better than png?
For simple online consumption? Yes, definitely. PNG is even worse than JPEG for this.
PNG usefulness is for those cases where you really really really need lossless compression, which would mostly be professional printing, or really high quality stuff (wallpapers, etc).
It compresses better for lossless, and it beats JPEG at compressing lossy. It also supports transparency and animation, which JPEG lacks, and animated PNG files grow rather big.
I’ve seen plenty of images compress down to half their size in lossless mode when taking a PNG as an original. It’s quite impressive, really.
