The app was crashing instantly on a family member’s phone, and looking up the problem got me a lot of recent posts about the issue.
Fix:
- Go to the play store and find the app, either by searching for it, using the
installed appslist, or this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.maps - It should have a button for “Uninstall”, with a note about only uninstalling updates as it is a system app
- Select uninstall, and then open the app
You may also need to disable automatic updates for the app until this gets fixed.
- Repeat the first step to open the app page
- Tap the 3 dot menu
- Uncheck “Enable Auto Update”

It looks like my area/city has GTFS support, so it should work once implemented. You could check the list for your location too
