Nix is not transitioning for the last 20 years. The community recently had a lot of discussion lately and starting towards a better path. It’s moving at such a pace that even official wikis maybe be out of date.
Of course I cannot say if this change will fit your particular needs. As someone who tries new things but not always gets success I understand your frustration.

Just curious why is “reproducing the setup” important to you? You need to install it on a lot of systems?
AUR like stuff is simply not for Debian. You are expected to only use software in the official repos.
If you want AUR you should really use Arch Linux or a easier alternative like EndeavourOS.
If you really want AUR (like thing) on Debian I recommend the nix package manager. It will do it’s own thing without messing with the host OS.
He really takes time to explain things. Like if someone takes 10 minutes he takes 40 minutes. And it’s worth it; you just don’t get the info but also the “perspective”.
