While the wording is stupid, and “astrological” indeed refers to the superstitious bullshit, the zodiacs are not a believer/non-believer thing, but based on an astronomical(!) constellation being at a particular position in the sky in the period of said zodiac. That said, however, and without checking, I am sure that this does not align with the dates assigned to the zodiacs at all anymore because the Earth wobbles on it’s orbit & also because the zodiac cycles could never possibly align precisely with a year on Earth, simply because the dates are fixed and don’t account for leap years (the ~0.25 day extra each year).
Why did I make this point? Because it appears that in Europe at least, everyone knows their zodiac - I would be surprised if it’s any different in countries that use the same calendar.
Well - there’s nothing left to argue about - I do believe we have bigger climate killers than large computing centers, but it is a worrying trend to spend that much energy for an investment bubble on what is essentially an somewhat advanced word prediction. However, if we could somehow get the wish.com version of Tony Stark and other evil pisswads to die out, then yes, using LLMs for some creative ideas is a possibility. Or for references to other sources that you can then check.
However, the way those models are being trained is aimed at impressing naive people and that’s very dangerous, because those people mistake impressively coherent sentences for understanding and are willing to talk about automating tasks upon which lives depend.
I’m generally ok with people using LLMs to make their lives easier, because why not?
Because 1) it adds to killing our climate and 2) it increases dependencies on western oligarchs / technocrats who are generally horrible people and enemies of the public.

I would absolutely favor a complete ban on corporate social media just because it gives billionaire scumbags a direct algorithmic wire into the brains of the most malleable, most vulnerable part of the population. Okay, you have a point there. But in a way, that doesn’t refute my point - the opposite of “learning how to navigate it effectively” is letting children have access to it on their own. It would need to be taught in school, by qualified teachers (who don’t exist in sufficient quantity).

I am not so sure about this - because I have seen it evolve over the past decades, and as I previously pointed out, it’s become mostly ads, propaganda and bullshit. The only reason people spend more time online is because of the addictive mechanisms in most modern smartphone apps. Me, not using those, I find myself spending less and less time on the internet.
At the same time, I understand how important it is for kids to explore the internet on their own.
No more though. It’s more important that they spend time at the fresh air & play. The internet has become pretty useless outside of wikipedia & social media, and social media has become pretty toxic outside of a few spots (like we can hopefully keep lemmy).
I would absolutely support a 100% social media ban for all centralized networks (corporation controlled). Because they are used not only to damage the brains of children, but those of adults as well (see Eastern German elections). Only federated chat systems / social media should be allowed. But that’s where our fascist overlords have a conflict of interest - they desperately want to see everything we communicate - and chat control (literally, fuck you EU) is not possible in federated networks.

It’s a guess by me, but honestly I think it’s quite accurate - then again I just checked some statistics and those absolutely does not confirm my guess - however most unfortunately mix PCs and laptops (which are not the same in terms of how you learn with them, imo) and oftentimes even tablets (which are completely useless to learn anything about computers). The actual numbers as per the first statistic I found say that households with PCs are down from ca. 65% in the early 2000s to ca 43% in the 2022.
Thinking about it, that might actually be true, but I don’t think that anywhere close to 40% of children get exposure to computers & spend way too much time on mobile devices.
