Alright, this episode touched on something that I had no idea was a thing before I visited Japan for the first time. In Japan, when getting a draft beer, it is usually served with a huge head of foam on it. What they show here in the show is not really an exaggeration. I remember the first drink I ordered at an izakaya and being shocked at about a full third of the glass being the foam head. They even sell special mugs that allow you to create large amounts of foam from canned beer at home.

Still finding this show fun and the torturing of the maou and then Ex was a nice inversion of the formula.

I don’t know about Japan, but when I lived in Hong Kong in the 70s, waiters poured soft drinks/sodas to create foamy heads, then waited for the foam to die down before pouring the rest.

The purpose of all this is to get rid of the carbonation, which helps bring out more of the drink/soda/beer’s taste.

Yeah, I have run across that with soda before, people that intentionally let it go flat because they prefer the flavor without the dissolved CO2 and warm. According to my friend that was living in Japan at the time (who we were visiting on that trip), the large head of foam on the beer in Japan is mostly an aesthetic choice.

Having a head of foam absolutely impacts the flavor of beer as it helps slow the beer from oxidation by acting as a barrier to prevent ambient oxygen molecules from interacting with the beer underneath the foam. However, a much more modest 1/2 to 1 inch head serves that purpose pretty well. The desire for such large piles of foam is all about the style it is perceived to have.

I personally am not picky enough about what I eat or drink to really notice these things, but having so much foam does make drinking it a bit messier as it gets all over your upper lip/nose as you drink it.
