Very big losses for Russia, I thought they’d take a breather after taking Avdiivka, but apparently not.
The Russian election starts Friday next week, so they are probably trying to make it look like they are winning big, despite Putin claims Russia already won? But Russian propaganda is a weird thing, that doesn’t really make much sense.

Avdiivka was a well protected position and the new defensive line is quite a bit further West from Avdiivka. So Russia had to take some ground to reach it and Ukraine made them pay, but without really having good terrain to really put up a strong fight. It also means Russia has no good positions to hide and logistics are stretched. So they did not manage to break through the line, but just moved it further to the West.

Absolutely, originally I didn’t even think Russia would be able to take it in time for the election, but Ukraine lacking ammo probably helped Russia a lot.

Yes AFAIK Ukraine has spend months preparing the new defense line, so I would have thought Russia would be more cautious now, since they’ve achieved their primary PR goal for now.

You are absolutely right they didn’t manage to break through the line, but I never thought that was the purpose of the campaign against Avdiivka.

No, but it makes perfect sense to try. Ukraine did have a lot of troops and equipment out in the open in unprotected positions and the new positions were likely to be at least partly manned by the soldiers leaving Avdiivka. So good time to try.

It doesn’t have to make sense. It’s designed to confuse everyone until they don’t know what is real or not. Then, the will to fight it disappears and you get people who don’t care that almost half a million of your people are dead or missing half their limbs, and a three day special military exercise has gone on for 2 years.
