My phone only goes off silent on the rare occasions I’ve been asked to be on call for an emergency project at work.

So like three times in the last ten years.

I set mine to an innocuous background sound that only I will recognize like something small clattering on the floor or a small creaking noise. Its like a gun silencer, instead of making it silent you just make it sound like something else.

I have also found it important to either control which apps can send me notifications or control which apps are on my phone in the first place.

      I should probably do that.

Mine currently sounds a little too much like the birds we have around here, which causes me to either panic because my phone must be going off a lot (and therefore something bad has happened) or I completely ignore it, admiring said birds (and potentially miss an important notification)

I’ve found that “do not disturb” + allowing all contacts trough is actually quote nice.

If I turn it off I get spam like “your google drive storage is running out” (has been for the last 2 years), “automatic payment for the subscription you’ve had for 5 years went through”, “would you like to rate my app on Google play?”, blah blah blah

ye you can turn them off individually, but I’ve not missed anything important in a year since my phone has been on “do not disturb” all the time

I’m using an aged chinaphone (Xiaomi Redmi4x) and their UI comes with a pre-installed app called “Info Assistent”. I fucking hate that thing. I fucking hate it. It constantly spams me with shit like current weather, tomorrow’s weather, useless soccer results that I don’t care about, the literal content of the waste bin, cache data… It spams about 5 times a day. I cannot revoke its rights, I cannot uninstall it, I cannot shut it down. The suckage is forced on me, why?

Run the xiaomi.eu ROMs (or lineage if you don’t like miui at all) or use one of the various debloat scripts over ADB. Take a look over on XDA, Xiaomi phones are incredibly well supported by the modding/custom rom community.

I’ve heard about this thing in Chinese culture where people value the ability to replace their phone cheaply and easily over personalizing their thing to suit them, and hanging on to things.

Considering this phone is Chinese, I’m guessing this might be one reason why?

You mean App vault? I have the same model. After disabling notifications of it, it only bothers me on the homescreen.

What about when you need to actually use do not disturb? I have it on at night to stop my phone buzzing when my idiot morning friends message me

It still works, you can edit the settings. But if you want one ez pz button for silence and still have your alarm work, I suggest airplane mode

I’m so glad the era of custom ringtones came and went. It was fun while it lasted but it got old pretty quick. I can’t even remember the last time I heard someone else’s phone ring in public.

I still have the same custom ringtones/alerts set from when I got my first smartphone. Of course I rarely hear them since it’s on silent 99% of the time. But the custom vibration patterns are indispensable.

If my phone isn’t as loud as I can make it using ringtones and notifications that have been modified to be about 14db higher, I don’t even notice it. I use the MGS ! sound for most things so if people look at me when my phone goes off, it’s appropriate.

    “Fuck! I’ve been spotted!”

I keep my ringtone and most of my notifications on silent, but I keep a chime on for certain DMs because there’s some people I just really wanna talk to badly enough that I wanna know instantly the second they message me.

The annoying thing is that notifications really don’t seem to be designed around that concept that you choose which people or bits of information are important to you.
