It’s that time of the week again. This time it’s about books you hate to read but still keep reading. Usually I drop a book when I don’t enjoy it but currently, I’m reading a series (Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles) that I absolutely despise with a passion but I still keep grabbing new volumes for some reason that I might need to get checked out.

Does anyone of you have something like that or am I the only masochistic weirdo out here?

I saw this and was thinking, that’s crazy, why would someone do that.

Then I remembered I’m in like the 8th arc or something of Arifureta. I read a few pages a year. It’s the only book I have on my phone so whenever I’m at the mechanic or waiting at the dentist or something I get a few more pages down. Everything after volume 1 has just been “just gotta get to the end. just gotta get to the end.” Been that way for at least like five years or more (on this one volume, I mean).

I’ve definitely hate-finished books so that I can justify trashing them, but normally I drop the series afterwards.

Dungeon Busters is probably the best example; it so quickly went from mildly interesting concept to grossly misogynistic that I had to keep reading to make sure there wasn’t some twist or development to redeem it.

There wasn’t. It actually got worse. And confirmed by other female characters to boot. Garbage book.

The one with the cards? I always get it mixed up with the one where they are building a company around level grinding.

The latter, I think, although I forget some details. It was very much a business consultant’s power fantasy.

Ah, it wasn’t that bad then at least compared to the other one I had in mind. The other one was virtually the same but people could turn into trading cards and MC had his sex slave trading card. I forgot the name of the series, but it’ll come up back again when a new volume is released. I try to remember to point it out then.

I think for me it was tearmoon empire. I hated Mia’s luck and how everything she has done went to her benefit.

When I have heard that translator was changed I lost a reason to pick the series back up again.

I love Tearmoon, but yeah, the translator change was rough. It got better since the last volume, but it still lacks the wit of the first volumes.

From the looks of it I dropped it mid way volume 8. (Way before the translator change, I think I got bored)

          I read volume 10 it’s okay ish.

My main issue is I feel like I am loosing track of where the plot is heading.

Quof also kinda spoiled me on prepubs as in Acendence of a Bookworm most of the time parts usually end at the end of 1-2 chapters.

Tearmoon by contrast can have parts which end in the middle of a chapter (not sure if that’s the norm, hope I don’t sound to picky).

I read a few other prepubs and yea, they usually end in the middle of the chapter.

AoB is special. As Rozemyne would describe it it would be a (cash cow) whatever that means. It certainly gets special attention.

I’m not a prolific LN reader (I’ve read like, Haruhi Suzumiya and that’s it) but I just wanted to add that it’s perfectly normal to find appeal in hate reading/hate watching something. Sometimes you are enjoying it like a slow motion car crash. Other times it’s fun to mock the plot, characters or dialogue. Even though the whole time you might be thinking “this is complete trash” there’s something gripping about it. At least for me, I’m more likely to finish reading/watching something that I hate rather than something that is merely boring.

Good point. I think I could look at it in a way where it at least makes me feel something about the book, where often I can barely remember reading something completely average.
