It’s when the Americans already went to bed but the Europeans didn’t wake up yet. I’m in South Korea and around lunch even sorting by “New” doesn’t give me any new posts, sometimes up to one hour.

I know it’s a cliche but try posting yourself. That’s the only way places like this grow. I don’t particularly enjoy posting so I try my best to keep conversations flowing and add discussion to posts without much going on. Every little bit helps.

To that end, what’s your favorite thing about South Korea? I don’t really know all that much about it. Are you from there or working there or what?

Greetings from China! I’m not much of a poster though, so admittedly my interactions are by and large restricted to comments.

I’m always browsing Lemmy by /new though (with a well curated block, ban and keyword filter), and the Australians are quite active during those times.

Hm perhaps I’m missing out on some Australian content? Any tiops on communities?

I guess the content from China is mostly in Chinese?

I don’t think there are any actual Chinese communities, at least I’m not active in any. And I’m not actively following anything from Australia either really. I’ve come to terms with the fact that there’s fairly little stuff posted on Lemmy in general, so browsing all (instead of subscriptions) and sorting by new is how I find stuff.

Yeah that makes sense. I’m on a single user instance where subscribed and /all is exactly the same which makes the problem even bigger.

There are Australians producing content on all the usual communities. Unless you’re interested specifically in content about Australia or aimed towards other Australians in particular, you’re probably not missing out on anything.

If that is what you want, check the communities hosted on aussie.zone.

Some instances are available, so federated content is visible if you’re on one that works. But external links often don’t, and you generally want to hide your online presence even if the sites you visit are not blocked, so I’m using a VPN near 24/7.

I’m surprised the great firewall doesn’t block known blocks of VPN IP addresses.

Impossible, VPN providers rent server space in large data centers, just like any other “legitimate” service. If they were to blacklist entire blocks, they’d shut out a number of services people are, meant to use.

So they’d have to surgically blacklist individual IP addresses - which they do, mind you - but it’s a matter of 3 clicks for the VPN provider to change to any other IP within the data center. And they operate in hundreds of locations globally, so even if one is shut down for good, you got plenty of alternatives.

Be the change you want to see. On Lemmy, it actually matters to the entire community what you do. If you post a few things every day, other people in the same area will see some activity. :)

Hi Jeena! What instances are on your federation lists for jemmy.jeena.net? What “languages” are selected for the federation/your profile? There’s a few active instances at this time, but does depend on if you’re subscribed to them, and the languages they send (and your instance accepts).

Check your settings for https://jemmy.jeena.net/admin. Is Private instance checked? (Probably shouldn’t be). IS federation enabled checked (It should be) Anything listed in allowed instances? What about blocked instances? Languages should have everything listed, including Undetermined.

I have a sleep disorder so I’m always awake through the night. For me I kinda appreciate that it makes it easier to stop scrolling, cause there’s not anything new showing up and I’ve already seen the posts for the day :)

I can see how it’d be lonely though. Perhaps I’m used to it cause my sleep disorder is isolating whether I’m using lemmy or not

I hope you have a lovely day today :)

I realize now my wording was unclear 😅. The former. I go to bed around 9am-12pm right now, and wake up around 7pm-9pm.

I have a very weird schedule, but I do sleep. It’s isolating because my daytime seldom overlaps that of others, if I never slept at all I’d have TONS of time to spend with folks

I do, it’s always nice getting to say good morning to folks as I’m on my way to bed. And sometimes I end up skipping sleep in order to do something that requires I be awake during normal hours (like doctor’s appointments, my friends wedding) and its always nice to hang out with folks on those days ☺️

I’m grateful my friends also often stay up later than they normally would to hang out, and I often try to wake early for social time :)

Hmmh, your post shows 04:50 in the morning. That’s definitely a time even the insomniacs would be asleep in Europe.

It’s a bit better for us. When I go to bed, the Americans from the east start to come home from work. (And there is a good amount of Germans here on Lemmy.)

And hello from Europe (sweden)! I visited Korea last year and whilst I wasn’t using Lemmy then those time difference really made it hard to talk to anyone who happened to find them self in Europe.

And for a solution to the problem, maybe there are some Korean communities with a bit more activity during that time?

Agreed. It would be a very unique lemmy client feature to have! At the moment, I use lemmy almost entirely on my phone, so I’m able take a partial screenshot and have my phone translate the screenshot in its place. But I will admit, it’s still quite inconvenient.
