Have you ever wondered what those characters etched in the high ranked demons’ eyes are, and why the subtitles say a number?

Like the 肆 in this episode’s screenshot is 4, which would commonly be written as 四

These are obsolete or formal Japanese number characters, which are derived from Chinese financial number characters.

These more sophisticated characters were used in finance because some of the commonly used characters, like 一, 二 for example, can be altered to look like other common numbers

    If you can imagine a 一 for 1, being altered to look like any number character that contains a single horizontal stroke, like 2 二, 3 三, 4 四, 5 五, 6 六, 7 七, 9 九, 10 十, 100 百, 1000 千, 10,000 万.

2 二 and 3 三 could also be altered to look like other numerals. Just use your imagination!
