So what does the title of this show 喧嘩独学 “Kenka Dokugaku” actually mean?
Kenka 喧嘩 in Japanese means fight, brawl, argument.
The individual meanings of the characters is:
喧 ken “to be noisy, loud, clamorous, or to be much talked about, much discussed”
嘩 ka doesn’t really have a meaning by itself, but it seems to be related to noise. It’s also the character for the name Akira.
独 doku means alone, an individual, single (as opposed to married)
学 gaku means study, learning, as in gakko 学校 school
So really the show title means “Self Study of Fighting”
I had never head of Korean Ssireum wrestling before this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnpxpvSFlhw
Evidently Hobin’s next opponent, Mangi Hwang is supposed to have won its most prestigious open tournament, in which contestants of all weights fight each other to win the title “Strongest Under The Sky”
Hobin is starting to master the principles of fighting, as opposed to individual moves, and he’s worried that he’s starting to enjoy fighting.
Done!
