Evil Lieutenant (and us viewers):
I was looking forward to this one, but the romance just felt very unbalanced. Evil Lieutenant seems to have character traits, motivation, and agency, but Magical Girl just sort of… doesn’t. It doesn’t feel like she has any power or inclination to steer the course of her life at all, and it’s not even anything she does that catches Evil Lieutenant’s eye, but just her appearance. On top of all that, Magical Girl’s voice acting makes her sound like a literal child, and her character design doesn’t do very much to change that impression, which is really uncomfy when she’s cast opposite a man who is definitely at least in his mid 20s.
The one thing I’ll say in its favor though is that it has outstanding production values for a short-form anime. It would look great even compared to a lot of full-length shows, and normally a show of its length would be all cut corners.
ETA: didn’t realize this was BONES. now the production values make sense, lol
