My ex and I got on one of the first such maps back in 2005 or so. Having a young child, we dug in a bit.
The vast majority of offenses seemed like no big deal. We were taken aback by what counts as a “sex offender”. Don’t know how to explain that statement. Maybe the offenses were far less “dramatic” than we expected?
And keep in mind, scoring a sex offender is great for the local DA’s numbers. Kinda like how we see bullshit terrorism charges.
Isnt like, public urination enough to land you on the register?
Yup depending the city, state, and judge it can land you on the list. It makes it less effective in my opinion honestly. Actual sex offender i.e rapists, child molesters should be how it should be.
Why is there such a big concentration of sex offenders though?
Because cities are concentrated places, and prosecutors are incentivized to put people on the list for minor offenses?
Maybe because its a concentration of humans called a city. And sex offenders are a super wide range, 99% don’t have anything to do with children and like half don’t even with another person in general.
Isn’t stuff like peeing “in public” a “sex offense”?
Yes. within like 500ft of a school, church or playground.
When all is said and done, all it takes for a charge like that to get taken care of is money to pay the fines, lawyer to get it expunged, etc …but kiddie diddlers do not have that option.
Why pay for something like that? 99,99% of people don’t give a shit about these maps exactly because they contain shit loads of people that shouldn’t be on them.
And child molesters are like… 0.x% of the actual Sex offenders, people just think much about them because every single one is being publicly paraded basically, thats also why most of them fear therapy before committing a crime. Such maps in general are… 1984 basically.
