Because that shit will fuck you up. For life. It’s scary how so many of the really dangerous recreational drugs are so easily available while the arguably-less-harmful (and, yes, all drugs have potential for harm) are completely illegal.
lsd my beloved :( ostracised because they had to put hippies in prison for something. schedule I with no medical uses my ass too, that ban stopped every ongoing research into how lsd could help in psychiatry, and though research wasn’t finished it sure as hell didn’t look like it was useless. The US drug enforcement administration lied in nearly every single part of their statement following the ban
US Government: “A substance that makes people more empathetic? This could destroy the American way of life!”
bruh you have no idea how correct you are on that
“By the mid-1960s the backlash against the use of LSD and its perceived corrosive effects on cultural values resulted in governmental action to restrict the availability of the drug by making use of it illegal.[29]”
now let’s all have a sit down and think about the state of the “cultural values” if feeling love towards your fellow human beings, and jamming to music is somehow corrosive to them… just- i have no idea how people fell for that bullshit
Quick LSD anecdote: LSD literally reminded me what actual happiness feels like. I’ve struggled with depression for much of my life and had a stretch of about a decade where my mood never rose above the level of “meh” and was often much worse than that. LSD filled me with joy and allowed me to feel happiness again even after I came back down.
For that reason I will forever be an LSD advocate.
I love the “afterglow” of psychedelics. It’s one of the main reason I take them. They have changed so many lives and I can’t wait to see how widely accepted they are in the future.
Its crazy how stuff like this is legal and teens used to go to gas stations to buy shit like k2 and saliva.
Teens buy saliva nowadays? Idk, maybe it’s my advancing millennial age, but why would anyone buy saliva? Blech 🤢
nahh not so much anymore but like 8 years ago they were. I wonder what shit kids are buying from the gas station now?overpriced Kratom?
I think you meant to say salvia, maybe?
Mostly nicotine vapes I think, particularly the disposable ones
My buddy told me about how his dad found this energy supplement next to the dick pills at a gas station, said ‘what the hell, why not’ and it made him feel really weird and gross, which took him by total surprise, and he had to pull over to avoid causing an accident because he was driving.
It was kratom. They sell kratom as an energy supplement at gas stations next to the dick pills. With no warning of the addiction or withdrawal symptoms associated with it being similar to that of opioids. He’d never even heard of the stuff before. (Apparently it’s been dubbed ‘gas station heroin’, so maybe I was one of that day’s lucky 1000. I only knew of it being sold at a lot of smoke shops, but at least you know what you’re buying there.)
Now, I admit, I didn’t see the bottle myself. Maybe my buddy’s dad is a dumbass (actually, no maybe about it, he certainly is from the stories I’ve heard), maybe the people that buy those supplements from dick pill stand or drink strange elixirs without thinking much about it don’t deserve my sympathy, but in an ideal world that kind of warning would at the very least be really hard to miss before you take it and especially before you get behind the wheel of a car…
Here’s the nursing school pharase for anticholinergic side effects: Can’t see, can’t pee, can’t spit, can’t shit. Doctors tend to use: red as a beet, dry as a bone, blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, hot as a hare, full as a flask.
If going through that just to also be able to hallucinate sounds appealing to you, go for it.
just eat some psychedelics like a normal person the worst those can do is shatter your image of self and then rebuild it, oh and sometimes your muscles can ache a little afterwards because flexing them felt amazing
I think it should be pointed out that some traditional psychoactive drugs (such as datura) work the same was (they’re potent anticholinergics) and you’d have to be nuts to use them.
Scopolamime is a deleiriant not a hallucinogen, it is not fun or recreational at all, don’t do it kids
Not a psychedelic*. It very much is a hallucinogen.
Any advice on getting decent info for someone considering beginning that particular journey?
Thank you!
Erowid is one of those “old Internet” relics that I’m grateful we still have. Now I need to sit and ponder my nostalgia for no less than 30 minutes.
although idk if there’s just not a lot of content for it being a forum or if I’m just really bad at navigating it… the threads always seem abruptly short and I haven’t found a good way to browse them but maybe I’m spoiled with modern social media.
I was too much of a bookie introvert to have found the good drug websites during that era. Lol. Glad that something remained, though. I just started a neocities site and it’s such a blast from the past. I’m having to completely relearn everything, though. My old angel fire was 99% copy and paste and I didn’t commit any of the html to memory lol
As an alternative to psychedelics, you can reach the same states through meditation. With modern techniques you won’t even need to sit under a tree for 49 days.
technically you can but that’s going to take you roughly 100 times longer and might not work at all
Look, I did not plant this bodhi tree for the fun of it, I’ll take my 49 days!
But also any links to meditation advice is appreciated
My personal advice is: Making meditation a habit is the main hurdle. Set the bar of success so low you can trip over it, such as “I will meditate at least 3 minutes a day”.
And for more what you seem to be after, you can’t go wrong with the Gateway tapes. They’re some guided meditations with a fancy audio technique that helps your brain tune to the desired mental frequency. This is a good place to start: r/gatewaytapes/wiki/start but I wouldn’t recommend browsing the subreddit unless you want your experience to be influenced by the sub’s communal lore.
If you’d like I can send you a link to a drive folder with the files if you don’t want to pay.
Hi fren would you mind sending me those files? Drive link is perfect or whatever you prefer
I’d love a link! Thank you so much!
Also, sorry for taking so long to reply. Haven’t had a lot of Lemmy time the last few days

Also seratonin sickness and personally acid gives me a crazy fever
Yeah I looked into mushrooms until I realized that people on SSRI meds won’t get anything from it and also seraronin sickness is lethal in some cases.
The only time I’ve heard of serotonin syndrome being a real (common) risk is with MAOIs and alcohol…
Shrooms/SSRIs causing it is not something I’ve ever been able to find information about. Every time I try to dig something up, because I am pretty careful about mixing drugs, the vague consensus (that is, in sources that aren’t making blanket statements about recreational drugs in general being bad because drugs are bad) is it’s probably fine, maybe it lessens the trip altogether, maybe it lessens the negative side effects of the trip, we just need to look into it more. Serotonin syndrome is a conspicuous thing to not mention if that’s a risk with any significant merit to it.
It’s certainly an emerging field due to psilocybin’s place on the drug schedule preventing any very extensive research. It seems to me like that claim is based mostly on conjecture that because they both can increase presence of serotonin, that has potential to become a risky situation with SSRIs. Mind you, however, that the exact mechanisms of this are not fully understood by science and so aren’t very good bases to draw sweeping conclusions from without research or data.
I’m both an SNRI user (strattera) and occasional psychonaut (not more than once a month, if I had to give an average for the year). I’ve never had anything but positive experiences with mushrooms and haven’t noticed any difference on vs off my SNRI.
Had a bad trip on acid once but that was more down to hubris than anything else. I wasn’t even on the SNRI back then.
This is of course anecdotal so absolutely take in all the information and make your own decisions for your body. Just thought I’d share what I know.
(Sorry for all the edits, my longer comments tend to be living documents for their first 10 minutes of life or so, mostly for grammar fixes)
Thank you for this post with information.
Yeah, the info I was speaking from was mostly from a concern for the seraronin syndrome, not from hard evidence because like you said, it’s an emerging area of study.
I did just see a study a few days ago, coincidentally, where the abstract said they found a 3 to 6 months period of time from last dose of an SSRI before it stopped interfering with shrooms trips.
Found it again: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37291890/
Interested in your thoughts.
I haven’t delved too deep into this topic because everything I have read ranges from you won’t get anything from it to its actual dangerous for you.
Yeah, tolerance and dosing with shrooms is kinda tricky (as in there’s a trick to it, not that it’s really difficult) if you’re doing them with any regularity. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s similar to that where you have to take quite a bit more to not only break the threshold to trip again but achieve the same level of trip, and your tolerance lessens with each day that passes.
I might be able to attest to that if I had been doing shrooms a little longer before I started strattera. Perhaps it’s harder to achieve higher level trips, now that I think about it. But this is new information to me so it’s something I’ll have to keep an eye on. I happened to take .3g last night and got a bit more bang for my buck than expected. I also forgot to take my strattera yesterday. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Low level trips are still valuable though imo.
Well, here’s some personal experience.
Back in my teens, I had a nasty bout of sinus issues, stemming from allergies.
This was in the late eighties, and Benadryl was pretty much what everyone had. It was the default antihistamine.
So, with my dad at work, and my mom needing to handle shit, I just grabbed some supplies and holed up in my room.
Took a dose and then napped. Woke up, took the next dose, napped again.
This cycle continued for two days. Or so I thought.
I woke up at one point with he-man leaning out of the screen of the TV and talking some crazy shit. The walls were breathing, and the rug on the floor was crawling away.
Now, I don’t know how long I lay there just watching everything wiggle and squirm into and out of other dimensions, but my mom got home and brought me the drink I had asked for. She had left about three hours before.
To my best estimate, I took something like eight or ten of the damn things. I know I took at least six. There were two pills to a dose, and I could remember taking three doses for sure, but there were five of the blister packs empty, one of which might have been taken by my dad the week before, nobody could remember if it was from that box or the other we had. During all the dosing and sleeping, I thought it was days, and that makes the five doses a decent likelihood.
It was. . . Interesting.
For several days, I was loopy as hell. Not high, just kinda floating through life. And my dreams were even crazier than usual (I’ve always had intense dreams, still do) for about a week
Benadryl and wu-tang have that in common, they ain’t nothing to fuck with.
Do not fuck with benadryl. Do not even take it for allergies.
Eh one every now and then is fine, I take it for motion sickness when going on long car rides. Half a pill is enough. Then again, taking enough to get nightshade-like poisoning is really not recommended.
Long term use has now been linked to neurological issues, it crosses the blood brain barrier. However, yes occasional use is relatively safe. But it is not recommended as a daily antihistamine at all these days.
Oh yes, I’m completely aware. I’m a pharmacist with allergies. I always try to talk my patients out of first-gen antihistamines. Bilastine is my go to these days for myself. Zyrtec and generics as OTCs.
Best OTC sleep aid there is. Melatonin is not what everyone thinks it is.
That is how you get dementia.
Maybe if you try to trip by taking 100+mg, or use it every single night for a period of decades, sure. If you have a chronic sleep problem you should talk to a doctor, like any chronic issues, before using OTC drugs for any extended length of time. But for short term use you’re just spreading misinformation. Cite your sources or don’t do that.
Not soley based on diphenhydramine but anti cholinergics in general, on a population 65 and older. Poor data.
Can you expand on that? I take melatonin every day, have I been poisoning myself?
It’s more of a placebo than an actual sleep aid. It’s not harmful though. If you want to take it, don’t worry. If you think it helps, then in some small way it does.
Awesome, thanks!
But if you NEED to fall asleep in the next hour 25-50mg of diphenhydramine, 1-2 normal Benadryl or Advil/Tylenol/Motrin PM(with they’re active ingredients) does a pretty reliable job if you let it. You have to get in bed and give it a shot at working but I find little failure with it. You will however be somewhat groggy in the morning, drink water.

It’s most useful to take 2-3 hours before bed to reset your circadian rhythm. Essentially it mimics the melatonin you make at sun down to prepare your body for sleep. You only need 1-2 mg to do this.
I even think 1 mg is too much. It’s active in microgram doses. Also read the Wikipedia page, it’s poorly regulated and pills can contain upwards of 4x what they say.
I’ve heard of people developing a dependence on it when taking it regularly. Especially kids.
I use it a couple times a year for the occasional restless night and it seems to work for me.
It’s not inherently harmful afaik but it could disrupt your sleep if for any reason you have to stop taking it.
Take 50 of them and you’ll be seeing the god you believe in
Shit, you’ll see the gods, they don’t believe in.
you’ll see gods that don’t believe in you
But I believe in him and you
Been taking this stuff most of my life for allergies, can confirm it does exactly none of that lol.
Not at the medicinal dose. I think you need to eat like a whole insert of pills.
25, also don’t. It’s legit one of the craziest trips I’ve ever had and it’s highlighted by the fact that nearly everyone that does it will tell you it was crazy and powerful but don’t do it.
No one should spend multiple hours having full on conversations with people that aren’t there, it’s deeply unpleasant to watch from the outside and I’ve been on both sides.
Hahaha, I think I’ll stick to mushrooms
It’s a good idea.
fr
I’ve never wanted to, and will not be doing it haha. Thanks though, your comment is one more reason not to.
Did it change anything for you
Nah, you just have weird conversations and see people that aren’t there extremely vividly.
i remember my first beer
Mkay?
its def NOT safe tho

Say hello to hatman if you seem him
I had it for allergy issues, particularly when I was a kid. I never experienced anything like the listed symptoms
Yeah that’s because you took it as directed like you’re supposed to
Does Benadryl affect people differently? I’ve been taking this all my life, and all it does is stop my allergic reactions and put me to sleep. Some people are talking like they dropped acid.
A “recreational” dose is somewhere around 300 to 600 mg. Note, that it is definitely not a fun experience.
holy shit, those are only 10mg, I cut them in half for the dog during pollen season.
And has to be absolute murder on your kidneys
what’s it like?
Spiders… Spiders everywhere
This is the answer I was kind of looking for since I remember reading about “recreational use” of this substance and many people seemed to agree about the spiders, like it was the common hallucination. I never overtook these but it seemed like a strange phenomenon to me.
Its really just dark shadows, but our minds manifest our fears from the shadows, which tends to be spiders. “Fun” stuff!
I get the opposite from sleep. I wake up as if I took a stimulant. I get nervous, anxious, and energetic. I hate taking Benadryl.
You got to take them with robo to unlock the game’s achievement though.
Unfortunately this gives you the “no fly list” permanent debuff
Seriously?
The amount of people in here thinking that this happens on a prescribed dose for some other people is concerning
It enhances sleep deprivation. A 100mg dose on 36 hours no sleep will likely reveal the shadow people, a 50 mg dose on 48 hours no sleep will very likely reveal the shadow people, a 25 mg on 72 hours no sleep will almost definitely reveal the shadow people… if they haven’t already revealed themselves.
You do not want to meet the shadow people. Not because they are exceptionally creepy, but because it probably means some amount of brain damage, and they will never completely go away after.
I saw a giant shadow duck driving southbound I5 about 3 hours south of San Francisco. (30~ hours awake)
Shame about the brain damage i guess.
That is not a great state to be driving at…
With a few pints of vodka to wake you up, it’s fine
That is really interesting, seems like a sliding scale. Adding to your raw sleep deprivation with antihistamine effects
I used to hang out on the dph subreddit and it was one of my favorite drug subs. A little bit depressing because of the side effects and how many of them had already suffered significant brain damage though.
I miss the drug subs like /dph or /heroin. I read them for years since these very much interest me— there’s so much of the human experience I will never try— but I fear permanent side effects and am not much of the drug type anymore. If only I could try it and rewind time with the memories intact.
Plus the dph memes are great.
Safe?
