I use vp9 for my webm’s as well fwiw. The configuration of the host can also impact things. For instance, if I direct link to an image on twitter, their configuration blocks lemmy from showing a thumbnail or expanding the size. So, that is why I tend to post visuals from Comic Natalie (their CDN plays nice), or just upload the image directly.
