Another week in the books. Let’s chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.
Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).
Thanks for the nominations for the year-end awards everybody! We ended up with quite a few nomination forms for me to work through this week. Please look forward to the voting round beginning this time next week.
As for manga I read this past week, there are a few I wanted to mention specifically:
Only one chapter in English so far, but I really enjoyed it. The first chapter has a great hook at the end. It reminds me of Miyu-chan Will Always Be Your Friend in that way. I hope that the TL keeps going and catching up because I really want to see where this one goes.
This one was so chill. It reminds me of Bartender (I watched the 2024 show, not read the manga). Basically, a maid runs a jewelry store for her employer and each customer comes in with their own story/circumstances and she helps them with their jewelry-related problems. I know that sounds kind of lame, but give it a shot and you might just enjoy the laid-back, low-stakes, anthology-style storytelling like I did.
Alright, reading the synopsis for this one, it might sound like any other isekai you have seen before. But…in this one, the MC is on her third life. See, she died from overwork in Japan, then reincarnated and subsequently died again in a fantasy world from being overworked as an alchemist. So, in her third go at life, she swears she will live a slow, relaxing life this time. See? Totally different! In all seriousness, I have kind of enjoyed it so far, but I am hoping that it goes somewhere more interesting as the story gets established. So far, it’s been fairly generic.
I picked up this series this past week after @Rottcodd@ani.social posted it. I actually clicked through the link originally just to check if it was a series I followed or not (I have a hard time remembering romaji titles). That’s when I saw that it was being translated by Skythewood. I enjoy the other series that they TL, so thought I would give this one a go as well.
I have really enjoyed it and ended up bingeing all the 27 available chapters so far. The MC is one of those characters that is constantly kind of breaking the fourth wall by comparing the events of his story to anime/manga/light novel tropes. I often find that kind of thing annoying, but the writing of this series is good enough that I have actually enjoyed it a lot. There are a great set of supporting characters around him as well with some great dialog and interactions. The other characters are constantly giving him shit for being a weirdo, so I think that does a lot to help me tolerate how weird the MC actually is. I am really looking forward to more.
