I was just mopping about the whole situation with her and Cobain. Here you have this talented, autistic, heteroflexible musician, lovingly married to this other talented queer musician, and people blame her for Kurt’s death because they needed to blame someone. They couldn’t just pay their respects and admit that they didn’t understand. They can’t accept that nobody needs to be blamed, with themselves and society as a whole being the only force that deserves any of it, if only for making such an unsupportive world for people like Cobain and Love.
<CW: Depression>
If you want to blame anything for Kurt Cobain’s death, blame the depression he struggled with. It is the tragic truth of this particular mental illness that it can kill people while their loved ones are powerless to do anything about it. It is very, very hard for family and friends of people with depression to watch how their loved ones suffer and it is cruel to blame them for failing where even the best health care professionals are at the limit of what they can do.
I mean, even if you set aside Kurts death, I’m not sure anyone should be looking at Courtney Love as a role model.
Role models are complex. For example, my late best friend is a huge role model for me: he was always in his friends corner, and was tremendously kind and dependable; he was also a dumbass who was overly focussed on everyone else’s wellbeing, meaning that he’d ignore his own struggles until he couldn’t anymore, and then he found it hard to communicate his needs or accept help from the droves of people who loved him and would jump at the chance to support him. I think sometimes the best role-models often have a hefty dose of anti-role-model in them too; in the case of my friend, my goal is to emulate his virtues while avoiding the pitfalls he so often ran into.
She’s definitely a wild child and a bit batshit but probably also the victim of media smear campaigns, considering that she was one of the first to ever call out people like Harvey Weinstein, long before metoo.
We’re obsessed with responsibility, thinking that someone MUST be responsible for everything that happens. The sad truth is that NOBODY is in charge. There’s NOBODY to blame. Bad shit happens for reasons that transcend intentionality, as even when there is intention, it can still be of little consequence to what actually happens.
We’re specks of dust in the wind that think all gusts must come from another speck. We don’t know shit, and that truth has been staring us in the face for millenia.
Fuck...
I really need to sleep. I’m thinking too much
Head empty, no thoughts 😵💫
