Instead, it is more of a workplace comedy or parody of working in an academic lab in life sciences. I spent years doing just that and it is nailing that parody/humor aspect, so I enjoyed it a lot. That’s my bad, romance is something I was expecting going into this series, especially after the first chapter consisted largely of discussions on how Lala can appeal to other members of her department. Looking back on it that expectation might have come from my conflating this series in my head with Rikekoi - Science Fell in Love, so I Tried to Prove It, which is much more explicitly a romance.
I watched the first season of the anime and loved it, planning on reading it after finishing the second season. However, I hated the end of the second season and the direction the story was headed, so I decided against reading beyond that. I still think that the first season is a great standalone experience and I liked it a lot.
