Part horror, part comedy, mostly our protagonist, who is existentially named Kafka, getting himself into one bad situation after another.
His skull-like face as the titular Kaiju No. 8 is played for laughs, as much as his occasionally limited ability to keep himself looking like his original self.
As is his power of extreme strength, destroying walls with a touch, sweeping gaping holes in a building when he tries to open a window, and one-punching monsters into giblets.
All while he is determined to join the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, which is looking to destroy any kaiju, including himself, on sight.
It’s kind of a slow moving trainwreck, but it’s fun to watch.
