It is not official. It remains contentious and depends entirely on who you ask. China lays claim to Taiwan while Taiwan refutes that. Sure, Taiwan isn’t officially recognized as it’s own country by the UN, but that’s due to pressure from China.
For all intents and purposes, it is it’s own country.
