It’s almost that time! With the Apple event happening tomorrow, we’ll use this mega thread to talk about expectations, predictions, and anything else related to the big event.
Tomorrow, we’ll have a live event thread to discuss each announcement as it happens.
“This is our biggest camera bump yet. We think you’re gonna love it.”
If it has USB C and a 10x optical zoom I’m almost guaranteed to swap from Android to Apple finally. Google’s BS around making ads part of DRM or whatever was the last straw.
Posted from my Pixel 6 Pro…
If you don’t use tap to pay and can muscle your way through documentation, GrapheneOS is easily installable on all relatively current Pixel devices. But yeah, I’m not a fan either and as long as I’m on Android, that might tip me back again to using Graphene instead of stock Android.
I thought of that and looked through the steps to do it and I’m pretty sure I’m past the age of me wanting to try. There was a day it would have been something I couldn’t wait to do but I’m pretty sure I’m ~10 years past that day.
Hooray for being too old to give a shit! Retired mobile developer here; I have people regularly show me how to do things like tap-and-hold the space bar to position the cursor. I’d rather be outside going for a hike than fooling around with my phone, of all things.
Yeah, there’s a bit of a barrier. But getting it actually installed is a breeze. Chromium browser that supports WebUSB is all you need to get it flashed.
Them sure are pretty words. I feel like I’ll get myself in a lot of trouble with a bricked phone.
I know it sounds intimidating, but the install page walks you through the process step by step. As long as the browser can see your phone, you can flash it with a few button clicks.
My only issue with this is incompatibility with android auto.
Yup. That and tap to pay made me flash stock back. But I wouldnt count our going back someday.
is Graphene the new Cyanogen?
Kind of? It’s only supported on Pixel devices currently. I think a closer comparison to Cyanogen is LineageOS, since Lineage is literally a fork of Cyanogen after the original maintainers closed up shop. Lineage is more akin to AOSP/the stock Android experience, whereas Graphene has been hardened a bit more than your typical Android release to lend itself to a more privacy-centric experience. Tap to pay and Android auto don’t work on Graphene which broke it for me at the time, but I would consider going back despite that if Topics can’t easily be disabled on Android 13/14.

I’ve heard that about the browser, and does give me pause. I use Firefox on all my devices these days. But GrapheneOS and the like are beyond my desire to try to make work and maintain.
You can use Firefox on iOS.
Just instead of Firefox it’s basically a reskin of Safari.
Boo
As long as it makes my phone sit even LESS flat than before I’ll accept it.
Can’t wait for fully bendable devices to create a Möbius strip shaped one.

thanks for starting this. first keynote on lemmy lol
is this purely a hardware release? or are we going to get talk of the EU-geolocked sideloading thing
I would not be surprised if Apple does not mention it, in any keynote, ever.
This sentence was overly hard to parse.
“I would be surprised if Apple ever mentions this in a keynote. “
I found the original way more beautifully written…

Curious to see what they cripple with usbc. And if they’re updating every lightning port product to usbc too. Be interesting if all phones will get the pill/dynamic island treatment. Hope it’s useful and not a gimmick when more apps support it
Most other Apple products already use USBC and have for a while. It’s only the iPhone they’ve been dragging their feet on.
Except magic mouse, keyboard, trackpad and airpods. Did I miss something?
Airpods will have a USB C case announced
Also the Apple TV remote
Latest version is USBC as well
Ahh good to know. The ones I have, and one that a mate recently bought are lightning.
I think it will be hilarious to watch them continue forcing their phones to communicate with USB2.0 speeds even after the move to USB-C just so they can push more people to buy overpriced iCloud storage. It will be 2060 and we will still have USB 2.0 on our apple phones.
Most people haven’t transferred data between their iPhone and a computer using a cable in how many years? And USB2.0 isn’t the reason they haven’t. It’s that iCloud syncing is vastly more user friendly and, quiet frankly, effortless.
I’m actually ok with Thunderbolt speeds being only for the Pro phones. That’s where it makes sense to upcharge for it.
Sorry there’s no way I’m paying the absurd Apple iCloud prices needed to host all my photos. I’m not willing to pay whatever exorbitant price Apple tries to ram down my throat for anything they decide I need to pay them for. I will continue to point out this blatant money grab.

in 2060 the iphone will be the only piece of technology still using USB 2.0, a functioning reminder of the past
I assume that the not pro iPhone will loose it’s port in the next 5 years completely.
[notifications to upgrade your iCloud storage intensifying]
🤣👌🏻
luckily, my dad pays for Apple One with 2 Tb

Went on a vacation and my wife’s 13 got run over by a truck and my 12 pro back glass shattered by falling on concrete. Now I’m fully ready for new phones. Hopefully one of my kidneys is enough.
Yeah, I hear ya. Both my kids have X’s which are losing support, plus they have a lot of physical damage. Time to upgrade our 13 Pro’s, so the kids can have those …… depending on just how expensive this is going to be
Me reading on my iPhone X: people seem to have too much money…
I’m rocking a 12 Pro Max that could use a new battery. But because it’s so big I don’t notice the drop in battery capacity/health. Thinking of maybe updating this year or just getting a new battery put in. Waiting to see what they actually announce.
An optical zoom at something like 10x might actually do it.
FYI you can get the back glass of a 12 repaired by a 3rd party for a reasonable price compared to a whole frame swap at the apple store basically.
Also the 13 board might still work if swapped into another totaled phone, just chuck it up on ebay. Someone will probably buy it as a project.Shhhhh he wants to spend his money.
I don’t know if the 13 board is salvageable. It was in a purse when it was run over, and the button in the purse almost punched through the screen out the back. As for the 12 pro, I’m not looking to replace that. Just changing the case to hide the back. I’ll check out about the back replacement. It might at least work for a trade in.
Yeah that’s really unfortunate it’s not fixable…😉😉

I will use this mini until apple pries it from my cold dead hands (or at least release a new 5.7” or smaller device)

My craziest prediction: iMessage for Android
That’d be great, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.
IIRC they openly stated in an interview that iMessage is one of people’s greatest incentives to stick to the Apple ecosystem, and they have no plans of shooting themselves in the foot by releasing it on android.
Apple said they will not release a stylus and then they did.
One can still hope. They were already doing small optimizations with the help of Google. And with all the blue bubble talk lately, they might have had another meeting about it.
Well, that is already possible with tools such as Matrix isn’t it?
I heard it has some disadvantages. I don’t use Android, I just want my friends to be able to use iMessage without any hassle.
The biggest disadvantage is you have to be added to chats via your Apple ID instead of your phone number unless you jump through some hoops to get your primary phone number registered with iMessage. I’ve been using this in some way shape or form for the last several years from Airmessage to Bluebubbles to Beeper with just my Apple ID. I used one of the tricks to register my primary “Android” phone number with iMessage earlier this summer and it’s been working great since. Just cost me a few bucks for an old iPhone 8 with a cracked screen and an old SIM. It just sits at my house and thinks it still has my primary number in it.
But no regular person will do all of that if they can just use Whatsapp.
Eh, that would require a propensity of people in my circle of friends/contacts to utilize WhatsApp. (Not going to happen, at least on my neck of the woods) At that point we’re going to use Signal which several of my friend and family do already. My wife uses an iPhone so having functional iMessage with her has been absolutely clutch.
Signal is the better choice but unfortunately Whatsapp is the leading chat service here in Germany. By far.
Never.
Lol, after denial of iMessage relevance in EU to be sure do not have to apply to the interoperability law enforced by by EU, I doubt.

I actually think this is the perfect amount of crazy to work.
For a fee!
For a mere $300 a month “iOS on Android” subscription, Android users may have iMessage and message other iOS users as if they were a proper Blue Bubble.

iPhone mini RIP 2021-2023
My suggestion for the next Apple product - iThumb. Extend your digit to reach ever expanding phone displays.
🤞here’s hoping the next SE is mini sized.

An interesting effect of unifying Mac and iPhone tech is that games ported to Mac need little work to be ported to iPhone.
Getting actual AAA games on iPhone is kinda cool but still seems very impractical. Mostly because if you can afford an iPhone 15 pro you can afford a game console, Mac/PC, etc.
Controls are definitely the limiting factor at this point. I’ve tried a few console and PC game ports via Apple Arcade recently, and they all run great but the touch controls are really clunky - especially when they try to emulate analogue sticks.
It’s about time Apple took a stab at a games controller, leaving it to 3rd parties hasn’t created enough momentum. An Apple take on a gaming pad would be interesting, especially with some sort of MagSafe iPhone mount. A controller also seems a natural expansion for the Vision Pro.

USB 2.0 speeds on the non-Pro model. Hah Apple…
I nominate @cheery_coffee@lemmy.ca for shitposter of the month. Their comments really made the event more entertaining

Did I miss it our did they not announce release dates for iOS 17 etc?
deleted by creator
Thanks, I just saw it on a website also.
Weird they didn’t mention it in the keynote, software release dates are usually up first. Maybe some last minute issues meant they couldn’t confirm a date during recording? I’ve not followed the latest betas that closely.

If you missed it, I missed it too
I didn’t notice it either. Maybe they don’t know at this point.
I’m ready for a new iPhone. My XS needs an upgrade!
Same exact boat here. My xs has served me well but it’s time for an upgrade.
Uhh. Who needs raytraced video games on their iPhone? I really doubt many mobile games are going to support and leverage that capability. If they do you would hard pressed to notice it on a phone screen.
