Hey everyone. What seems to have been established itself as the main anime related instance, ani.social, has been defederated from Lemmy.ml.
I am wondering if it would be better to move this community over here so I will copy my posts from lemmy.ml here in ani.social for a while as well and then see where more engagement is happening. Since I create the posts by hand (I can’t program a bot) I don’t want to have this a permanent solution, but I’ll give it at least a few months or until it’s clear where the greener pastures are.
So basically:
- There is a new LightNovel community on ani.social now
- You can all vote where the permanent home should be by using whichever you like better.

I had never any contact with the .ml admins, and they never interacted with the LN community over there in any form. I obviously had no contact with the admins over here as well in the few hours that I’m here. So I am personally 100% indifferent to the admins on either instance.
What made me create the community here is that it feels like I’m screaming into the void over there. There has been a little uptick in the last month or so in replies to the weekly posts, but the community has never reached the point where it stopped being carried by me alone. Someone pointed out that ani.social got defederated so I wonder simply if the lightnovel community is a better fit over here. Especially if it turns out that there is some overlap / migration that would mean that I wouldn’t need to just “abandon” the existing users. I would kinda feel bad to just up and leave.

Relevant detail: DO NOT LINK ani.social in lemmy.ml, otherwise the admins there will use it as an excuse to silence the discussion about migrating the community to this instance, under the lying allegation that it’s a “pedo instance”.
Instead, it’s better to say that you’re migrating it to the anime instance that can be found in Lemmy Explorer.
Honestly, if they decide to ban the post, community or me because of this, it would only turn something that isn’t an easy decision for me to make, into something that is.
If the post links ani.social, they’ll likely just remove it at first. Then if you insist on emigrating the comm they’ll look for another excuse to get rid of you. Then one of the admins will say “I’ve read a few pages of a LN once! So we should totally keep a LN community in a FLOSS+privacy instance! lol.” and recruit new mods without explaining what happened with you.
That’s basically what happened in !anime@lemmy.ml.

Yeah, I get this on a visceral level. I started up the manga community on this instance after the defederation, and it was a while before that changed even a little bit. Even now, there are maybe only ~6 of us that actively post. I don’t read LN/WNs as much as I used to*, but will try to make an effort to chime in here. At least, I am more often on this instance, so I will be more likely to see the posts here.
*I got a different job in which I can work from home more often, so it means less time sitting on a train/subway reading LNs.
Regarding user activity -
I think it’s just finding the right instance. I think a anime / LN / Manga specific instance like this will do much better than a general instance.
I found that community by accident from clicking through lots of links. Then I lurked for a bit before trying to be active and comment on each weekly post.
I find the weekly releases very useful, I haven’t found anywhere else to get that information easily.
Side note - Let me know if you want to look at some automation. I am not great and haven’t worked with Lemmy before but I have some experience with automating work.
Well, just comparing the replies to this post between instances paints a clear picture. And that’s without me advertising the community at all apart from a sticky on .ml. I did not expect anyone to find this community on this instance for weeks without me going around other related communities on a proselytizing spree. I assume @wjs018 linking in the sidebar of !anime@ani.social and !manga@ani.social has helped a lot here.
I would be grateful if there could be a automated post every week. It’s not much work to do them manually but still something I have to do and schedule.
