Hey everyone. What seems to have been established itself as the main anime related instance, ani.social, has been defederated from Lemmy.ml.
I am wondering if it would be better to move this community over here so I will copy my posts from lemmy.ml here in ani.social for a while as well and then see where more engagement is happening. Since I create the posts by hand (I can’t program a bot) I don’t want to have this a permanent solution, but I’ll give it at least a few months or until it’s clear where the greener pastures are.
So basically:
- There is a new LightNovel community on ani.social now
- You can all vote where the permanent home should be by using whichever you like better.
You do a great job with the lightnovels community over on ml. I used to be more active over there, but since starting up communities here, just haven’t had the time to check back in on ml as often.
I still think back to how I had initially recommended Villainess Level 99 and then you hated it. Ever since then, I have been a bit more cautious in my praise for the series. It’s that kind of discourse that helps us appreciate other POVs and I hope to be able to contribute more to this community.
Welcome to the instance (provisionally)!
Edit: adding it to the sidebars for !anime@ani.social and !manga@ani.social
I still think back to how…
I think that is the point of this community. To read stuff collectively and try to find the 1% that is great. So if you think we all should share what we read and think about them and recommend the best ones.
For me the 1% is The conqueror from a dying kingdom the cliff hanger at the end of volume 6 still kills me inside
Edit: adding it to the sidebars for !anime@ani.social and !manga@ani.social
Thanks for helping with spreading the word!! Means a lot! The mods on .ml never added the community to the sidebar, probably because I didn’t make the guy I was in contact with a mod.

Yes, I remember. How do you like the adaptation that’s currently running? I must say that I find it a lot easier to consume as a anime. But then again I’m in a better place right now and might be a lot more lenient to the LN as well. Maybe I pick it back up again once I’m through my backlog.
I have been really enjoying the adaptation. It is fairly obvious that there are some severe budgetary restrictions they are working under, but I think they have been smart in their approach. Too often, LN adaptations cut out a huge portion of the internal dialogue of the character, to the story’s detriment. In this case, they have had loads of internal Yumiella internal dialogue. Not only does this mean less things you need to animate, but it also helps the humor land better because that is where the misunderstandings lie. Also, Fairouz Ai has been killing it as Yumiella, so giving her more dialogue is never a bad thing. Plus the OP and ED are both fun which is always a plus.
I heavily recommend, for anyone moderating communities in lemmy.ml, to migrate their communities to other instances. Otherwise you’re exposing the other users of your comm(s) to rogue admins. The administration of lemmy.ml is garbage, and it engages on
- witch hunting
- enforcement of hidden rules
- censorship strictu sensu
- blatant lack of transparency
- taking the userbase as gullible sheep to be herded
- trigger-happiness
Also, from my experience migrating a linguistics community from lemmy.ml to mander.xyz, I genuinely believe that communities thrive way more if they’re in suitable instances. I think that you described it rather well when you said that “it feels like I’m screaming into the void over there”.
Thanks, good to know

I had never any contact with the .ml admins, and they never interacted with the LN community over there in any form. I obviously had no contact with the admins over here as well in the few hours that I’m here. So I am personally 100% indifferent to the admins on either instance.
What made me create the community here is that it feels like I’m screaming into the void over there. There has been a little uptick in the last month or so in replies to the weekly posts, but the community has never reached the point where it stopped being carried by me alone. Someone pointed out that ani.social got defederated so I wonder simply if the lightnovel community is a better fit over here. Especially if it turns out that there is some overlap / migration that would mean that I wouldn’t need to just “abandon” the existing users. I would kinda feel bad to just up and leave.

Relevant detail: DO NOT LINK ani.social in lemmy.ml, otherwise the admins there will use it as an excuse to silence the discussion about migrating the community to this instance, under the lying allegation that it’s a “pedo instance”.
Instead, it’s better to say that you’re migrating it to the anime instance that can be found in Lemmy Explorer.
Honestly, if they decide to ban the post, community or me because of this, it would only turn something that isn’t an easy decision for me to make, into something that is.
If the post links ani.social, they’ll likely just remove it at first. Then if you insist on emigrating the comm they’ll look for another excuse to get rid of you. Then one of the admins will say “I’ve read a few pages of a LN once! So we should totally keep a LN community in a FLOSS+privacy instance! lol.” and recruit new mods without explaining what happened with you.
That’s basically what happened in !anime@lemmy.ml.

I’m screaming into the void
Yeah, I get this on a visceral level. I started up the manga community on this instance after the defederation, and it was a while before that changed even a little bit. Even now, there are maybe only ~6 of us that actively post. I don’t read LN/WNs as much as I used to*, but will try to make an effort to chime in here. At least, I am more often on this instance, so I will be more likely to see the posts here.
*I got a different job in which I can work from home more often, so it means less time sitting on a train/subway reading LNs.
Regarding user activity -
I think it’s just finding the right instance. I think a anime / LN / Manga specific instance like this will do much better than a general instance.
I found that community by accident from clicking through lots of links. Then I lurked for a bit before trying to be active and comment on each weekly post.
I find the weekly releases very useful, I haven’t found anywhere else to get that information easily.
Side note - Let me know if you want to look at some automation. I am not great and haven’t worked with Lemmy before but I have some experience with automating work.
Well, just comparing the replies to this post between instances paints a clear picture. And that’s without me advertising the community at all apart from a sticky on .ml. I did not expect anyone to find this community on this instance for weeks without me going around other related communities on a proselytizing spree. I assume @wjs018 linking in the sidebar of !anime@ani.social and !manga@ani.social has helped a lot here.
I would be grateful if there could be a automated post every week. It’s not much work to do them manually but still something I have to do and schedule.
