The story begins with Igarashi, who was disqualified as a pro golfer after a certain “incident” and thus moves to Kagoshima Prefecture’s Tokara Islands to step out of the limelight. On these islands known as “Japan’s last unexplored wilderness,” he encounters a naive girl named Tonbo.

As it turns out, these supposedly unexplored islands have a homemade golf course, where Tonbo plays every day. She demonstrates genius-level prowess, playing every kind of shot with just one golf club, a 3-iron. Igarashi is amazed at Tonbo’s talent, even as he harbors doubts about her only using a 3-iron. Yet, hidden deep in Tonbo’s heart lies a painful, sad past….

If you were like me and wondered to yourself, “Is golf even popular in Japan?” Then, you might be surprised to know there is a long history of golf anime in the country. If you want to learn more, @LiteralGrill@ani.social wrote an excellent piece about golf anime and the surprising, recent influence that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on them over at Anime Herald. Definitely recommended reading.

This is so sweet of you to share my work like this, thank you! I’m also pretty excited for Season 2 of Tonbo! as it was a surprisingly touching tale emotionally, even with all the technical golf talk.

I clearly remember a golf anime from the mid 80s. After a quick search, the original name was Ashita tenki ni naare.

Never really watched it at the time, but a lot of my elementary class school mates were into it.

I didn’t watch this series, but the only option I could find after a quick search in my region (US) is streaming through Amazon Prime. Otherwise, sailing the high seas is a fallback for when other routes fail.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting anyone to say that.
