The battle finally kicks off this episode and we get to see our Rescue Squad do their thing. The kidnappers are out in force snatching the bodies away and dispersing the enemy using stink bombs. Usato is out saving people after getting a special killing technique from Rose off screen. And the heroes are doing their part by being completely useless and just about dying.
One thing that strikes me about this story seeing it animated (I previously have read the manga), is that the battlefield feels quite empty here. Usato is running across what is supposed to be a raging battlefield where humanity if fighting for survival and he comes across one demon attacking one human. Later, he falls down and is attacked by…one demon and is saved by…one human. Shouldn’t there be literal armies of people on the battlefield? Idk, it feels weird how sparse things are. Even the heroes group is like, 20? people total? They are in the vanguard, if there should be tons of people anywhere, it’s there. It has to be for the sake of simplifying the animation, but it was noticeable this episode.
In any case, next episode should be interesting as we get closer to the finale. I honestly don’t know how I would feel about a season 2. From reading the manga, these early parts were my favorite parts of the story and I haven’t been super thrilled with the adaptation.
