The team battle finale is here…and it’s over…with Team Kuzunoha’s victory! However, it seems something strange is happening to Ilumgand, but we will have to find out more next episode.
Overall, I liked this episode, but there were a couple choices that I think were a bit weird. First is that we completely skipped the whole team tournament and just jumped right into the finale. I can forgive this as those fights are not really that consequential. But, we instead spend a ton of time on the final fight itself…which is also not that consequential. The real meat of this part of the story is what happens after the team tournament finale, but now we are going to have to wait until next week.
Instead, I think they could have spent more time on other parts of this story instead of the action sequences of the fight. See my other comment in this thread that there is a lot more Ilumgand story they could have told if they spent the time on it. Also, they might show more of it next week, but the demiplane side of things was left out of this episode.
Ultimately, we have spent the last couple episodes building up Makoto’s frustrations. He is annoyed at the hyumans for their interference with his students, Laurel bugging him about being a sage, the Merchant Guild for exploiting his inexperience and naivety. This episode, we also see him get annoyed with the demons as he feels as though Rona has not lived up to the spirit of their conversation even if she abided by the letter. Strap in for Makoto’s frustrations to boil over soon!

When it comes to pacing, I do wonder how they storyboard this stuff. I feel like the rigid ~25min, 12 or 13 episodes must make it difficult. Like how they’re going to split up the future content, I have no idea. I have some idea of stopping points but, there’s a lot to do and feel like not a lot of great stopping points, though I guess cliffhangers are a thing.
I do wonder if non-aired anime ever gets more freedom of like, “ok this time we’re going to do a 32 minute episode”. “ok this season will be 16 episodes”. Maybe not a thing but wonder if it would make pacing things much easier
That’s a good question on pacing. If we look at Western media made for streaming platforms, it often varies in length episode to episode. My wife and I recently were watching The Crown and some episodes are a pretty standard ~45 minutes, while some are over an hour long. I think there is a difference in this kind of thing when it comes to animation as it takes a lot more work to just drop in a couple extra scenes.
I suspect that even if an animated show was created and aired for streaming only, that they would still stick pretty close to the traditional pacing/timing. I am guessing that is because that is what the production/animation teams are used to doing and it would also enable it to be aired on broadcast more easily at some point in the future if desired.
We got Ilumgand’s backstory. Not all of his predicament is his fault, there was some bad timing and he was taken advantage of by Rona, but his behavior was pretty bad that I don’t feel bad about him even if he is turning into something non-hyuman.
He might not be too bad a person previously, Hibiki had some good word for him in the manga.

Yeah, I feel like his story was quite abbreviated in the anime. They tried to get across some of his story to help the viewer empathize, but there was still quite a bit cut. He was largely a victim of bad timing, poor communication, and then a very opportunistic Rona. IIRC, when he spent time training with Hibiki, they spent time talking about a future society in which the barriers between nobility and non-nobility were eroded and there was more equality in general. He also very much cared for Ruria and was very hurt when she tried to brush him aside, essentially ignoring or forgetting their shared past together (which was very meaningful to him).
Also iirc, Rona is in communication with him often as he is given stronger and stronger doses of the medicine. She amplifies his insecurities and stokes his hatred for Kuzunoha. This drives him to deeper depths of desperation, desiring more pills. It is a vicious cycle that ultimately leads to the events that we will see play out next episode.
At the end of the day, I don’t feel too bad for him. But, I do think that he was pretty well fleshed out for what essentially amounts to a minor antagonist. It’s a credit to the writing that he wasn’t simply some jerk looking for power like we so often see in the isekai/power fantasy genre.
A bit of backstory at the start which sort of rounds the plot out. Feel like most of it was pretty obvious, but they really spelled it out for people just in case they weren’t able to pick up on hair styles in shadowy back alleys. I am shocked by what happened at the end of the episode… If it wasn’t for the opening which has had the scene this whole time.
I can’t quite remember if the whole Hibiki thing was a thing in the WN or if that was added in the LN. I don’t quite remember it from the WN, but as 1Fuji2Taka3Nasubi noted, it’s been mentioned in the manga at least.
It does feel like the demons really had a ton of pieces to play for here. A potential hero party member, messing with Rotsgard, which I can’t remember if it was a trade center or education center or both for the humans, but I’m pretty sure it’s important. The Limia, king? was it? Empire princess, adventurer guild master (of course mentioned he helped the demons before so maybe not this one, or maybe they’d just consider it a necessary sacrifice), and those Lorel Union folks. And all they had to do was potentially make Makoto less favorable to them. Seems like it should be worth it. Especially since Rona just made an informal verbal agreement not to harm Makoto, it’s his fault for not getting things in writing, so he can’t be too mad, right?
Excited that it’s finally kicking off, one more week, and then another, and then maybe a few more… until the end.
I have only read the WN and I remember Hibiki and Ilumgand talking about their ideals and future society developments, so I am pretty confident it was in there (though I also read the manga, but pretty sure it was in the WN).
As for Rotsgard, my memory is that it is an unaffiliated city-state that is essentially used as a neutral academy city that other country’s nobles send their elite and gifted for education. The thing that made Makoto want to set up base there in the first place is that it is unaffiliated with a greater power, so he would not be asked to do things like espionage against other hyuman powers.
I am really looking forward to the next couple episodes. Makoto has been holding in a lot of anger/frustration with the world around him, so it is about time for that come bursting out.
I probably just forgot it then, most likely has been a while, and I think when I did reread it I probably started where this episode ends, funny enough, since everything before it kind of felt like the prologue to me.

After two downer episodes in a row I’m losing patience with the show. Something about the pacing and story composition just isn’t working for me. Seems like a lot of the focus in the last two episodes was on the students, but the show never really game me a reason to care about them other than their association with Makoto. Meanwhile all the more interesting storylines get teased then showed aside for a predicable tournament arc.
This might end up being one of those shows best watched all at once after the season ends…
