I wonder what the church would do if they discovered that Makoto has more mana than the bug/goddess. Not that they’ll ever know!

The new OP has Makoto wearing that power ranger costume made by Mio. Given his mana matter… vest? golem? mecha?, he’ll likely do it to appease Mio, not as a serious weapon.

I am really looking forward to the whole sequence in which Makoto is wearing Mio’s suit. It marks the intersection of a number of different plot threads and I suspect is what the second cour is going to build up to.

This is my nomination for the screenshot, it comes from the new ED (@rikka@ani.social)

First off, the new OP and ED do a lot of revealing of what is to come. I was pretty surprised at how much is shown in the two sequences. The music itself didn’t really blow me away, but I didn’t hate it either.

The festival story, like many sequences in this story, ties together several different plot threads and introduces some new ones. In this episode we have an ongoing confrontation with the Assassin’s Guild, the climate issue, tension between human nations over the priestess. We introduce a potential conflict with the demons in the future, the Laurel Kingdom knowing what kanji are, an upcoming tournament arc, and now this whole deal with the church prying for information. There is a lot going on!

Probably the most surprising thing this whole episode to me was how a ton of characters were lewded in the ED. I mean, have you seen Shiki like this before?

Seeing a lewded Emma was a surprise as well.

The assassin showing up again surprised me. I thought he was not hired to kill Makoto, though he might think that he failed ‘cos Makoto passed the exam, and he wanted to correct that, despite the person who hired him was already out of the picture.

I hadn’t really thought about it, but I would guess it became a matter of pride, both professional and personal. Professional in that he was hired to do something and failed, so he feels like he needs remediate his professional reputation. Personal in that Makoto broke his prized knife, so he went out and got it repaired or another one to use as the weapon of choice to go after Makoto again.

Tbh, I think the more important plot point from this encounter is how unfazed Makoto is by killing and disposing of the assassin bodies. It was a big moment in season 1 when he killed his first hyuman, but I think this is supposed to help us to recognize a way in which Makoto has changed since then.

          makoto's personality

and Root’s “do you like demihumans? Or dislike hyumens?”

The new OP is so hype and also spoils so much! Though I can’t believe it if they’re going to go through all of what was shown, what a wild ride the rest of the cour will be. I’ve certainly forgotten about some events and specifically when things happen, surprised to already see them happening. And also really interested in the fact that some things haven’t been cut, like I would’ve expected the church stuff to be cut (I might be forgetting anything related to it a bit, I know there is some importance there, as we got a shot through the veil right at the end, but could see it as something to speed past if they wanted to, them taking their time is a good sign).

This episode felt like it paced itself so well to where when the halfway mark showed up I thought the episode was over, felt like it had already been an hour.

      OP…spoils so much

This was my feeling as well. I was blown away by how far ahead things in the OP happen. I didn’t think we were going to get that far through the story. So, either a lot of stuff is cut, or they rearranged the story quite a bit like they did the first season. Time will tell. Glad I wasn’t the only one that was taken aback by the visuals of the OP.

I don’t want to get overly excited because remembering Overlord season 1 opening also had a ton of scenes that were only in much later seasons. But thinking about what happens, it all really does hit the fan all at once now that I remember.

Oh and I meant to say definitely recognize the OP band from the first season, good to hear them again, really like the original OP

And since I commented on foreshadowing last time, my favorite foreshadowing moment this episode goes to

      foreshadowing

“that location, huh?” when looking at the map
