This episode in a nutshell, for me: those poke a jaguar with a short stick and those who are wiser than that. Laurel/Sairitsu is handling Makoto in a cunning and smarter way, while the Hopleys family… eh.

…but then the jaguar turns upside down for belly rubs. Goddammit Makoto, you almost spilled the beans about being from another world with the kudzu vs. medicine reading of “kuzu”!

False compared the situation of Japanese in Laurel with Latin. False is extra messy to explain stuff, and this info is second-hand for them, but I think that I got it:

    • Japanese as used by Makoto would be like Vulgar Latin. It’s simply a language spoken by a population.
    • Japanese as used in Laurel would be like Mediaeval + Modern Latin, after the Romance split. It’s a prestigious variety, partially derived from the above, without native speakers.

It surprised me that False just casually gave that Latin analogy, it demonstrates a deep understanding of Earth’s culture for someone who have never been to it and had to learn everything second-hand.

I think your reading of the language is correct. At the very least, the two versions of Japanese have diverged enough over time that they aren’t super comparable anymore, beyond things like individual kanji meanings.

I think that the Hopleys are falling prey to an aristocratic form of natural selection. In this episode, not only do we see Laurel decide to back off Makoto, but also Princess Lily after she is warned by False. They are both smart enough to realize that if they push too hard on this person, it could easily be the end of them. However, the current Hopleys heir seems to lack the tact or intuition to back off a self-destructive path for the sake of revenge for some perceived slight.

Slower episode this week with lots of dialog. This series is all about having tons of different plot threads going at one time. This time, they have brought a lot of them together in one place; the school tournament. Everybody is interested in Kuzunoha for various reasons.

I almost feel bad for Princess Lily. She is a ruthless schemer, yes…but she has also been paired, through no fault of her own, with one of the worst humans alive, Tomoki. She has to somehow try to keep Tomoki happy and fighting for her while at the same time gathering military power to continue the war against demons. I think she demonstrates her practical way of thinking when she seems to abandon the idea of pursuing Kuzunoha further after Root’s warning, trusting that he is giving her a warning for her own good.

As for another power player that is present, I don’t remember how this exactly played out in the WN, but I got the feeling watching it now that Laurel gave up its pursuit of Kuzunoha too easily. He is clearly lying to them and they know it…but I guess they might not want to press the point and end up offending him. I am guessing that we won’t get into the Laurel arc of the story this season, but it would probably be a future season 3. This is kind of laying some of the initial groundwork.

Coming up, looks like we are going to dive into the tournament. I hope they don’t draw out the tournament too much, but if they really go hard with the animation it could be worth it. Time will tell!

      INTRIGUE! the episode

One of my fears with having such a hype OP, not sure how long it will take to live up to it as there’s always so much setup

I almost feel bad for Princess Lily.

I forget how much they went into detail back… Oh I was going to say season 1 but obviously it was at the start of this season. But she obviously has a difficult past, just like a lot of the characters. All of the factions are just doing the best with the hands they’ve been dealt and the story does a good job being a bit realistic imo in that people act cautiously when they don’t have information or continuously try to infiltrate / spy on other factions.
