I have a really soft spot for the manga series, and I’m glad to see it being animated. So far the animation has been fine, I hope that it’s kept this way.

…Sensei doesn’t want to become a hero but an hero.

I love every frame of this. I think I found my anime of the season.

I enjoyed the offbeat humor and poking fun at the isekai genera, but I’m not sure I want a whole season of it. Hopefully expanding the cast and him finding a reason to live will move things along.

I didn’t learn until after watching the episode, but honestly I find it really gross to have an anime based around a famous person from within living memory, who famously died by suicide, on a comedy journey to commit suicide. It also feels really gross to portray him as this terrible of a person. Like, from the fact that he forgot his girlfriend even existed, it seemed like she wasn’t actually a partner but rather an accessory for him to take with him in death. And then we see him talk about how he’s enjoying watching the catgirl die ?? Without the historical context, this seemed like an edgy and distasteful comedy where the jokes fell flat, but with context it’s taken to a whole new level.

    0/5

      Agreed. Very disrespectful and distasteful

So this show bothers me fairly greatly on some level due to the changing of a major historical event (major in terms of this show’s characters, that is). For those curious

If you’re going to incorporate the death of a historical figure into an isekai, at least let them die in the same manner in which they really did die. Nothing good comes of just some random truck popping into the scene.

      RL to manga/anime adaptation changes

The problem is one of motivation - IRL Dazai got what he wanted and tried multiple times, a double suicide; Isekai Shikkaku Sensei didn’t, due to truck-kun, and that is why he’s still trying. If his fate was the same as IRL Dazai, and he got transported after death to isekai, he’d stop trying to kill himself.

And given that truck-kun is highly unrealistic, thus the audience is expected to know that it’s bullshit, we can safely interpret it as a “what if Dazai was transported to another world, instead of succeeding on his last suicide attempt?”.

Fair enough. I didn’t really think too much about it. But I’d also argue that

        Isekai Shikkaku episode 1

He didn’t want to live in any world, presumably. So maybe he ends up killing himself as intended, but as opposed to going to whatever afterlife he believed in, he ends up in the other world, and thus wants to kill himself a second time? That’s another possible plot, no?

Better than I expected, but does this have more than one joke?

I was skeptical at first for encouraging suicide but in the end he choose to live another day. That’s enough for me. I will keep watching, but this isn’t something to recommend to others.

This is first time I am hearing about Dazai so it will be interesting. Maybe I will do some side reading.
